Breastfeeding probiotics help support a mother’s digestive health and that of her baby. They are especially helpful when you’re pregnant and nursing or have been through a traumatic birth.
The microbiota of a breastfed infant is significantly different from that of a formula-fed infant. This is due to the presence of more Lactobacillus bacteria in the gastrointestinal tract of a breastfed infant and less of other species of probiotic bacteria such as Veillonellaceae, Enterococcaceae, Streptococcaceae and Lachnospiraceae compared to a formula-fed infant [58].
Pregnancy and Breastfeeding
Establishing a healthy gut and robust microbiome is important from preconception. This is why we recommend taking one sachet of Qiara Pregnancy and Breastfeeding daily during pregnancy to help establish a strong and robust microbiome.
Breastfeeding and Probiotics: How They Benefit Both Mom and Baby
Research shows that the innate immune system can be boosted by the consumption of probiotics (8). This could potentially reduce the risk of autoimmunei conditions, such as eczema and asthma in both mother and child.
Preventing Mastitis
In a recent study, Lactobacillus salivarius was shown to be effective in preventing mastitis in women with a prior history of mastitis. In this trial, the probiotic was administered before, during and after breastfeeding. It was also found to be effective in reducing fecal B. infantis counts by 2.5-3.5 logs at 6-12 months compared to infants who did not receive probiotics or formula.
Several companies offer broad-spectrum probiotics, which contain multiple strains of probiotics in a single dose. However, clinical trials are usually conducted with a single strain, so it is unclear how multiple strains in a single dose may interact with or inhibit each other.
